Thelma Wright and her daughter Alison Brown

Following the death of her father, Alison’s mum Thelma, wanted to move to a smaller more manageable home. Thelma wanted to keep her independence and active lifestyle but have the safety and security of a retirement community, offering support should she need it in the future.

After living in the Carlisle home Thelma shared with her late husband for 56 years, selling a house with so many memories wasn’t an easy decision. Choosing the right property and making the move happen as quickly as possible was a priority for the whole family. Unsure of the local market and dreading hosting viewings, McCarthy and Stone part exchange partner, Spring, was able to simply purchase the home directly from Thelma, freeing her to make the move to her new apartment quickly and easily.

We weren’t familiar with Spring prior to the move, but after several conversations, we decided it was the right way to move forward due to the ease, convenience and simplicity of the service. We wanted Mum to be happy and settle as quickly as possible – Spring let her do just that”, praised Alison.

The family had a dedicated Spring advisor, Rebecca, from the onset of their part-exchange journey, who was on hand to help and support. “Rebecca was marvellous. The whole process was so transparent, and Rebecca gave clear information throughout”, said Alison. “It gave us peace of mind knowing Mum could move so quickly and not have to wait. It took a lot of pressure off us all and I couldn’t imagine selling in this situation any other way”.

Thelma fell in love with a McCarthy and Stone development just 5 minutes’ walk from Alison’s home. The wide range of onsite facilities, including a guest suite for Thelma’s visiting sons, give the family the quality time they wanted. “Having Mum only 5 minutes away is amazing. I love being able to walk there, it’s so much more convenient for us both. I couldn’t be happier”.

Alison believes the move has enabled Thelma to continue her active lifestyle thanks to activities on site and walks around the extensive grounds. “Mum is really enjoying her daily walks, and even takes the stairs up to her apartment rather than using the lift”, said Alison“it’s reassuring for me know that Mum is happy and socialising again”.

Originally Thelma wanted a 2-bed ground floor apartment, but after several viewings, she realised a spacious second floor one bed apartment suited her more. “I love my large windows that flood the room with natural light, and I have stunning views over Carlisle. Everyone has been very friendly and made me feel so welcome”, says Thelma. Alison believes her late father would be delighted with how much her Mum is enjoying life in her new home.

Finding Mums new home and using Spring’s part-exchange service has made the whole move seamless and really easy”, said Alison. Following her move, Thelma benefited from a Spring Price Promise payment, allowing her to redecorate the apartment without using her savings. “We loved that Spring gave Mum an additional 4 weeks to move out of her house. My husband Peter and I were able to redecorate Mum’s apartment, then clear the house and garage in our own time. We couldn’t imagine trying to move and complete all in one day like a traditional house sale. It’s been a great experience and we can’t praise Rebecca and everyone at Spring enough”.
